Bernadette Uwicyeza is a pioneer of modern Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) in Rwanda, dedicated to shifting the legal landscape from an adversarial system to one rooted in mutual understanding. With an extensive background in business law and legal reform, she served as the founding Secretary-General of the Kigali International Arbitration Centre (KIAC). Today, as an ADR Advisor to the Rwandan Judiciary, Bernadette is the driving force behind the design and implementation of the nation's court-annexed mediation system.
Her work is defined by a passion for restorative justice and trauma-informed practice. Bernadette has been instrumental in drafting national mediation legislation and policies that honor Rwanda’s heritage of peaceful resolution while meeting international standards. Through her organization, Mediation Home, and her collaboration with global partners, she has trained hundreds of judges and lawyers, tirelessly advocating for the "hidden value" found in amicable settlements.
